Abigail described David when meeting him for the first time, though she had heard many things about him, as a man whose soul was bound in a “bundle of life” with the Lord, his God.~ 1 Sam. 25:29
Contrast what Jacob’s sons said about the seeming loss of Joseph, with what wise Abigail said of David. “…his [their father, Jacob] life is bound up in the lad’s life … when he seeth that the lad is not with us, that he will die.”~ Gen. 44:30.
Our lives should never be so involved with another’s that if something happened to him, whether it be physically, morally, or spiritually, ours would come to a halt.
The metaphor used above, we are told, is in reference to the Jews of old times. Their custom was to bind their life valuables in a bundle, wrapping them up and placing them in a sack. Like Joseph’s brothers, “And it came to pass as they emptied their sacks, that, behold, every man's bundle of money was in his sack.”~ Gen. 42:35
The purpose was to protect and safely preserve things they considered precious and of great value to them. This is what God does for His elect. We, each of His children, are a bundle of life to Him.
As my mentor, Dr. Joe Henry Hankins, used to say when stepping to the podium, “Isn’t it great being a Christian?”
