"And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail. And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him. And he took his staff in his hand, and chose five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd's bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine."~
(1 Sam. 17:38-40)
Saul, we are told, stood head and shoulders above all in Israel— a giant of a man, you might say. To have seen David standing there in Saul's armour would have been laughable. Imagine a boy of ten attempting to fight the neighborhood bully wearing his dad's jacket when his dad was six feet tall.
Never attempt to face the giants in your life in another's armour. I believe one of the all-time greatest statements of the Bible is, "I cannot go with these...And David put them off him." It is a dangerous thing trying to emulate another; ask the sons of Sceva. When they tried to imitate Paul, an evil spirit came upon them. Satan seeks out those who are not comfortable in their own skin. He finds it easier to control them.
You will be more than overwhelmed with what you can do when you are simply you! Many saints today are living on other Christians’ experiences. They covet what has happened in others’ lives as they have read in books and biographies. They attend meetings and conferences always seeking this something they do not have. Such believers are masterpieces of Satan. For he also was not satisfied with what God had made him!
At the root of all this is a discontentment with what God has created, "Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?..Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture."
My wife had a book entitled, "Dare to be Different." It takes some of us a long time to feel at home living with ourselves. But once an individual realizes the tenant within their tabernacle is a one-of-a-kind, that is, there is not another in all the world exactly like them, it is then the saying comes to pass, "The bigger they come, the harder they fall."
You may not have the talent of another, neither his or her intellect or the position they hold in life; but who cares, if at the end of your days, you left a long line of dead giants in the path you have trodden? Is it so bad leaving a legacy of being A GIANT KILLER!?
