Some spend much of their time speaking of the, “Good old days,” others of what good things lie ahead. And that is fine. But I have observed many among these do not want to talk about the nasty now and now.
Nostalgia can bring back sweet memories, but they are just that, memories. The sweet by and by is future, and wonderful to anticipate, but has not arrived yet. I think one of our greatest needs at this present time is facing how things stand at the present time.
Don’t misunderstand me, it is wise and proper to refer to the past and future, just as long as it helps us in the present. But timeless truths always need to be presented in a timely manner. The prophets of old as well as the preachers in the New Testament, “Spoke to the condition,” as the Quakers would say. Jesus Himself, in Luke chapter thirteen, spoke of two recent events to convey eternal truths.
When you speak in an old folks’ home you do not speak of running races; nor do you talk at a youth camp about a retirement plan. At both of these, YOU SPEAK TO THE NEEDS OF THAT GENERATION!
Both in preaching and private conversation we need to be discussing the issues at hand, no matter how unpleasant they may be at times. We cannot, like the ostrich, put our head in the sand. That never solved any problem.
