“A day of darkness and of gloominess, a day of clouds and of thick darkness…”~ Joel 2:2
The key phrase in Joel’s little book is, “The Day of the Lord.” It is used nine times in its three chapters. In chapter one he uses a past historical event to illustrate a prophetical one coming in chapter two. He tells us, as the saying goes, “It will be darkest before the dawn.” But he also informs us, to borrow John’s words, the darkness will pass and the true light will shine.
No diligent student of the Bible will deny the fact the Holy Book teaches before that great and notable Day of the Lord, dark times will precede it.
But throughout the scriptures, during these days of gloom and doom, we’re told, God’s people can and will have light, even if it is a darkness that can be felt, as in Israel’s case, when in Egypt. “And the LORD said unto Moses…there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, even darkness which may be felt…but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”~ Ex. 10:21,23
It is easy for dark days to draw God’s children away from their devotional life! It is important to remember, your Christian life will come no higher than your devotional life. David tells us in the book of Psalms that during difficult times, he was distracted. Let us not ever forget when all is dark around us, we have light. “...when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me.”~ Micha 7:8
When a boy I remember the old-time phone booths, when closing the door a light would automatically come on so one could read the directory. This is what happens to a saint when entering his devotional closet for prayer and the reading of the Word.
Keep the line of communication open between you and your God during these dark days. When we pray, we talk to God—when we read the Word, God talks to us.
