“Thou hast avouched the LORD this day to be thy God, and to walk in his ways, and to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and to hearken unto his voice: And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be his peculiar people, as he hath promised thee…”~ Deut. 26:17-18
The critics of the old 1611 K.J.V. love to bring up all the archaic words in the Authorized Version to prove their point, which has proved, time and again, that the tip of their point is dull.
I did research on Shakespeare’s writings; in his plays his characters use the word “avouched,” often. These cantankerous censors seem to be mute on this subject. It seems all is well if it is secular and by unregenerates. But if Spiritual, concerning God’s Word, well, as they say, "That's another thing."
The old English word “avouched” means to affirm or acknowledge as one’s own; to guarantee; to declare as matter of fact. What a precious word, referring to our relationship with our God, and His to us!
Have you ever avouched Him to be your God? If so, you can be dead certain He has avouched you to be His own! A “Peculiar People,” if you please.
This does not only have reference to Israel, but Believers today. Paul tells Titus as much, “Who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto Himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.”~ 2:14
Is it not a wonderful thing to be able to say, “He is my God!” But even more awesome to have Him say, “You are My people!”
