COME YE TO BETHLEHEM
“Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us...Jesus was born in Bethlehem…”~ Lk. 2:15; Matt. 2:1
“O come, all ye faithful Joyful and triumphant
O come, ye O come ye To Bethlehem
Come and behold Him born the King…
O come, let us adore Him...”
Bethlehem: a little town, least among among the thousands of Judah; the town of David’s great grandmother, Ruth; called, “The City of David”; the city David so loved that he longed for just a cup of sweet water from its well.
As to the world there was nothing great about Bethlehem, just another insignificant city. It was little noted in history. But God’s great purpose became a fact there in that barn, the Word that became flesh was lying in a manger.
Bethlehem is the link between heaven and earth. The same song fits both. There is joy in heaven and on earth. “Glory to God in the highest; on earth peace and good-will towards men.” The seed of the woman has finally come.
“God manifest in the flesh.” The Creator and creature are now linked together. Bethlehem brings together heaven and earth. God set up His tabernacle once again on earth, not this time made of the skins of animals but in the flesh of a sinless man: “The Man Christ Jesus!”
All earthly pride must be left at the gate as we enter the city of Bethlehem. The rich One who became poor for our sake that we might become rich is lying there as a defenseless baby, a Lamb, if you please. He came down that He might bring us up.
Is it not fitting then that the Bread of Life came from a city whose name means House of Bread? O, my dear friend, He not only knocks at your heart’s door but will come in if invited. Remember during this season: He only is reality, all else is hollow, shallow, to say the least.
"Many a thoroughbred came from a one horse town."~(rds)
