“[Satan] saith unto Him [Jesus], It is written…Jesus said unto him [Satan], It is written ‘again’…”
We find from our text that Satan is very familiar with the scriptures- more so, I think, than many of God’s elect. It may be his most effective tool in his arsenal for sabotaging the lives of Christians. He accomplishes this by adding to it, subtracting from it, taking it out of context and misquoting it.
In Jesus' temptation, the tempter noticeably leaves out seven important words when quoting Psalm ninety-one, “To keep thee in all thy ways.” There is no promise of safekeeping to those saints who are out of the way, only those in the way. God’s way was always Jesus’ way. This is why the angels of God were His constant companions.
From the first temptation of man in the Garden till this present hour, Satan’s purpose is the perversion of God’s Holy Word! HE IS A PERVERT!
The best way of not being taken in with this subtlety is to follow the Holy Spirit’s instruction, comparing scripture with scripture, as our Lord did in the above incident. The principle here is, “…in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.”
