I’ve learned I can’t make the successful advance I want on my way Home if I’m weighed down with too much baggage. I have found on my trip to New Jerusalem only the necessary is necessary. It is a painful thing leaving those luggages full of trinkets and non-essentials behind. Nevertheless, it will remove many hindrances, along with the frustration that accompany such.
Many of us need to downsize, that is, simplify our lives and ministries. Dr. Bob Jones used to say, “Simplicity is life’s most becoming garb.” We need to travel light! The writer of Hebrews put it this way, “…let us lay aside every weight…which doth so easily beset us.” You can’t run the race of life bogged down with a lot of gear.
Moses’ father-in-law, I think, had it right, when he spoke to Moses about the load he carried, “Thou wilt surely wear away...for this thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform it thyself alone.”
I’ve had to pack and repack over the years. It is always difficult leaving behind things we personally prefer, but imperative that we do.
God doesn’t put on us more than we can bear, nor should we!
