Flaming Prayers
“The effectual fervent (fiery) prayer of a righteous man availeth much.…Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly…”~ Jam. 516-17
One dictionary defines the word fervent as: hot, burning, glowing, having or displaying passionate intensity. Peter twice gives the Biblical meaning in his small second epistle. In chapter three he tells us it means to melt. Ice-cold prayers don't melt anything!
One of the main characteristics of Bible Christians as well as the early Church historically was their serious and earnest prayer lives. I have found, to my dismay, nonchalant prayers get non-answers.
My wife liked and quoted a little saying of mine, often. “When we mean business with God, He will mean business with us.” Elijah found this so. He sent a flaming fire up to God, and God sent a fire down to him. You might say in such cases, “What goes up must come down.”
Like Samson’s parents experienced, so it is with fiery prayers. When the Angel ascended up in the flame from their sacrifice on the altar, not long after the answer came down!
May we follow Paul’s companion and friend. “Epaphras…a servant of Christ…always labouring fervently…in prayers…”~ Col. 4:12
“Fervent prayers are born from a fervent spirit.”~rds
