“These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and ‘embraced’ them…” ~Heb. 11:13
The writer of Hebrews tells us the Old Testament saints “embraced” God’s promises to them. That is, they hugged them. If you look the word “embrace” up in your Bible you will find it mostly has reference to hugging someone or something.
When was the last time you hugged God’s Holy Book, where all His promises are made? I was especially blessed in reading our text in my devotional time today. I was not aware of the little nugget in it before now.
The reason for my being so blessed by it is the fact, for many years now when burdened, I sleep with God’s Book, hugging it to my bosom, as I fall asleep. During those trying times in my life and ministry, I found great solace in hugging His promises, as a kind of show to my God.
The saints of old did not, hold to the promises, or stand on the promises, THEY HUGGED THE PROMISES!
A hug can mean: support, comfort, consolation, affection, love, intimacy, etc.
Can you hear them? They're calling out to us! You ask, who? I say, the promises of God. They are crying, “GIVE ME A HUG!”

My parents both died during covid.
They died hugging the promises - I must live hugging the same. Thank you.
Yes Covid prevented a lot of hugging. We have much to make up for.
