One of Jesus’ rebukes to the Pharisees was that they majored on minors and minored on majors. They put 2 before 1 in order of importance! That is, they were the type who put a band-aid on an open gushing wound rather than using stitches to close it up. On trivials they had perfect eyesight, but on things of importance blind!
The following is not not meant to be a condemnation nor a commendation, but stating simple facts.
Many years ago, when a pastor, I was contacted by a Baptist publisher that they were interested in me contributing to a monthly devotional book. I replied I would be honored to do so. Not long after I received in the mail a form with a long list of questions on my beliefs. I believed in most of them, and ashamed to say even those listed that had no scriptural grounds, many of which I am too embarrassed to mention.
My problem was not with their beliefs, nor their preferences. It was with the fact that in their bookstore they promoted great godly men of the past who would have never come up to their man-made standards. To list a few: C.H. Spurgeon, he smoked cigars for many years as a pastor; and speaking of cigars, M.L. Jones who was associate to G.C. Morgan, that great expositor, tells us he smoked (8) stogies a day; they also promoted C.I. Scofield’s Study Bible. He divorced his Catholic wife and remarried, as a pastor, which this group was opposed to; I could go on and on, like many of the Puritans drinking fermented wine, etc. But the above should suffice in making my point.
I only bring out the above to show the inconsistencies in all of us. You might say of such people and organizations that they, “Whitewash the tombs” of those whom they would never promote or have preach; had they lived in our day.
Let us all remember, in the best of us there are holes in our armor! Some are pretty large. Nevertheless, God still uses them. The lesson? Stay out of God’s business!
