“Be careful (full of care) for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”~ Phil.4:6-7
D.L. Moody, that great old-time evangelist, has a book entitled, Notes From the Margin of My Bible. In it he has an interesting comment on our text, “Be careful for nothing; be prayerful for everything; be thankful for all things.”
Worry is a waste of time, “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” Like the little plaque says, that my daughter Leah sent me, “Give it to God and go to sleep.”
Worry shows up when we cease taking God into account in our difficult situations. As Oswald Chambers writes, “All our fret and worry is caused by calculating without God.” When we put God into it, everything changes!
I find in my own life, when I trust God worry flies out the window; but when I don’t, worry chirps on the window-sill, ready to fly in.
We took a young preacher into our home, years ago. He used to sing the little chorus, “Why worry when you can pray…” But he would humorestly change it to, “Why pray when you can worry…” I think that proved, “Many a truth is said in jest.”
I have found in my own life that when I worry most, I am praying least.
Oh, what peace we often forfeit
Oh, what needless pain we bear
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer
