He Loved Us-While We Were Yet...
“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”~ Rom. 5:8
“…the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”~ Gal. 2:20
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;).”~ Eph. 2:4-5
“Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood..”~ Rev. 1:5
The common thread in each of the above four texts is the fact that He loved us and died for us while we were yet in our sins; before He washed us. Like the Prodigal’s father who caressed and kissed his son before he cleaned him up. Our sins are no threat to God’s holiness. Where sin abounds, His grace super abounds! As far as eternity does when compared to time. As the gospel song puts it:
“Oh, what love, that He should die for me!
Saving grace thus to supply for me;
Oh, what love! Oh, what love!
Evermore I’ll sing it–Oh, what love!”
We are told in the Bible to rejoice in and about many things, but the one that stands out in my mind is the numerous times we are told to rejoice in our God and His salvation. I like the way Dr. Lloyd-Jones puts it. He tells us when everything is gone, when there seems to be nothing left, to come back to our Foundation, and rejoice in our Lord and His eternal salvation.
I am pretty sure he got his idea from Hab. 3:17-18, “Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.”
The writer of Hebrews describes this tremendous event in a believer’s life as, “How great a salvation.”
“Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.”~ 1 Jn. 4:11
