"His Only Son."
“And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt (try, Heb. 11:17) Abraham, and said unto him…Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.”~ Gen.22:1-2
I was reading recently a review on an upcoming Evangelical Christian movie, due out March 31st. It is entitled, “His Only Son.” It is based on Abraham offering up Isaac to the Lord, as a burnt sacrifice. The writer refers to the passage of scripture where it is found as, "One of the most controversial passages in the Bible.”
But to those saturated, soaked, drenched in the Word —I mean those saints who’ve read ALL the Bible time and again — this is not necessarily the case. There is no problem in this portion of scripture, other than simply believing it!
Throughout the Old Testament you find the heathen nations were accustomed to offer their children up as burnt offerings to their god(s). God is simply trying Abraham to see if he loves his GOD as much as they love their god.
Jesus said, “He that loveth…son…more than Me is not worthy of Me.” He is telling us, when it comes to God, TWO LOVES CANNOT COEXIST!
The passage is not a hard saying, not difficult at all to understand, to the spiritual minded.
The real difficulty is not in Abraham willing to offer up to HIS GOD his only son whom he loved; the real perplexity is God willing to offer up His only begotten Son, whom He loved! The sinless Lamb of God! For the likes of us.
An interesting note. Once Abraham gave Isaac to God, we’re told later, “Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the LORD blessed him,~ Gen. 26:12. He is the only one this is said of. Meditate on this.
