How Important is Growth to You?
“As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby…But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ…grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ.”~ 1 Pet. 2:2; 2 Pet. 3:18; Eph. 4:15
The Bible has much to say on the subject of growth both in nature, humanity, and especially when discussing the spiritual in our lives. Stunted growth in any of these areas should be of concern, most importantly the latter of the three mentioned.
It seems to me there are two extremes between the normal, as in most situations. The one is content being a spiritual pigmy all their Christian life; whereas on the other end of the spectrum there is a desire to sprout up, to full bloom, overnight.
Generally speaking, growth is a normal process. Rather than seen immediately, it is viewed over time, hindsight, if you please. To be unconcerned and uncaring about growth, not checking it from time to time, can cause irreversible damage to one’s spiritual being.
On the other hand, to sit around looking and watching for growth, can make you ineffective in the present. To this kind of saint we might remind them of the old adage, “A watched pot never boils.”
Daily tape-measuring your spiritual growth will only bring daily frustration. Read your Bible, pray, obey God, fulfill your daily duties, and growth will come!
Oswald Sanders tells the story of when his wife was dying of cancer. About ten days before the end, he was attending her, trying to make things as easy and comfortable for her as possible. She turned to him and said, “Don’t make things too easy for me, dear, I must keep on growing.”
Is growth as important to us as it was to her? I hope so!
