“Serving the Lord with all humility of mind…Put on therefore, as the elect of God…humbleness of mind…Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus…He humbled himself…”~ Acts 20:19; Col.3:12; Phil.2:5,8.
Some think a person is humble when he or she has a forlorn look about them and stooped shoulders. In reality, these may be caused by a natural temperament and poor posture.
Humility, contrary to popular teaching, is not thinking little of yourself; it is not thinking of yourself at all. One sure way of losing a humble spirit is attempting to be so. Authentic humility is forgetting self and placing one’s mind on God! (1 Chron. 7:14)
Paul tells us true humility is a thing of the mind. It has to do with the intellect, the brain, our thinking. As the wise man tells us, “As a man thinketh…so is he.” Like the apostle tells us again, “For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.”~ Gal. 6:3
To think only of self is the highest form of pride. To think only of God is the most legitimate form of humility!~ rds
