IS HE LIKE ME?
"And as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly."~ 1 Cor.15:49
The classic movie Forrest Gump features a very moving scene, among the many others. The title character is a slow person. When meeting his son for the first time, which he didn't know he had, he watches him in amazement. He then asks the boy's mother a heart-rending question, "Is he smart or like me."
When we read the tragic story of our first father Adam's choices and actions, and their far-reaching consequences, we might also ask, "Am I like him?" Sad to say the answer is, "YES!" Each of us was born with the stamp of his image upon us. His nature with all its bad traits were passed down to us.
But, thank God, we who have received Christ as our Savior and Lord now have a divine nature, says Peter. Paul tells us we are changed into Christ's image by the Spirit of God. The more we spend time with HIM, the more we become like HIM. The old man fades and the new man takes precedence over him.
As an evangelist, I always liked telling the story I read of the acclaimed Bible teacher Louis Talbot. A young man wanting to excuse his continual sinning said to the pastor, "I can't help it, I'm just like my father." To which the wise teacher replies, “Well, you have a new Father now, start acting like him."
