“Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.”~ 1 Pet. 1:8
Peter was writing to saints,“strangers scattered,” in various geographical areas, (1:1). They had never seen Jesus with the physical eye. In their case you could truly say “eye hath not seen.” Their personal vision of Him was by the eye of faith. As Moses, they saw Him who is invisible (Heb. 11:27). Their faith in Him came by hearing about Him (Rom. 10:17). The result was love for Him and joy in Him!
Any expectant parent can verify the above truth, that is, loving and joying in someone you have never yet seen. In the case with us and our unseen Saviour we have a “joy unspeakable.” The word Peter uses, “unspeakable,”along with joy has a strong meaning. That is, inexpressible, above description. In Webster’s Dictionary there are some 470,000 words; not one can describe the joy I'm speaking of!
Some saints mistakenly look to the flesh for this joy, but the carnal is opposed to and hates everything spiritual. ALL SPIRITUAL JOYS MUST FALL UNDER THE MAIN HEADING OF JOYING IN JESUS, if it is to be authentic! Only those who live in the Spirit will ever experience such a joy.
“Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.”~Jn. 20:29
