Jumping to Judgment
“If thou shalt hear say…Then shalt thou enquire, and make search, and ask diligently…if it be true.”
Hearsay is generally a dangerous standard to go by. First of all, you’ll find those repeating a matter usually don’t hear too well! And, as a result, you’ll get what they thought they heard. The well meaning messenger also adds his or her own analysis, flavored by their imagination as to what they hear.
Paul told the Corinthian saints, “I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.”
It is always wise to investigate, thoroughly and accurately, any hearsay. Especially when dealing with important issues, great pain and care needs to be taken in examining what has been reported, and it needs to be done without prejudice or partiality. This approach is God-like (Gen.18:20-21).
