LOOKING IN THE WRONG PLACE
“But as one was felling a beam, the axe head fell into the water: and he cried, and said, Alas, master! for it was borrowed. And the man of God said, Where fell it? And he shewed him the place...Therefore said he, Take it up to thee. And he put out his hand, and took it.”~ 2 Kgs. 6:5-7
A man had lost his ring and was searching for it under a street light. A passerby offered to help him commenting, “It shouldn’t be too hard to find under this light.” The searcher replied, “O, I didn’t lose it here, but across the street.” Asked why then he was looking in that particular place he replied, “There is more light here.”
My dear mother used to say, “Some people don’t have the sense they were born with.” Elisha would not be found listed among these intellectual pygmies. The man of God knew that you find the thing you have lost where you lost it. To our shame and embarrassment, many of us saints waste our time looking in all the wrong places.
Have you lost your sweet fellowship with God? You’ll find it by going back to Bethel; Jacob did. Has your walk of faith with God been interrupted, as our father Abraham’s was when he went down into Egypt ? Yes, we’re told he went down, but also that he went up and went on. These saints found that you can’t go on until you first go back!
Whenever we have found again what we lost, it will need to be picked up again by the hand of faith! Wishing, wanting, desiring, and longing, all of which are good qualities, will not put it in our possession again. Only an act of faith will enable us to possess our possessions once more. It is then we can go on our way rejoicing once again.
“Nothing is any more sad than to behold a child of God who has lost one of the main essentials of the Christian life and is unaware of that fact.”~rds
