“And one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, and with a loud voice glorified God, And fell down on his face at His feet, giving Him thanks: and he was a Samaritan. And Jesus answering said, Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine? There are not found that returned to give glory to God, save this stranger.”~ Lk. 17:15-18
Most if not all my readers are familiar with the Bible story of the Ten Lepers. In today's article, on this Thanksgiving Day, I’d like to touch on something that most of us saints come up short in. And that is the problem we have with thanksgiving. I am not speaking so much of ourselves, but in our relation with others.
We are all aware of the saying we tag on those with little or no gratitude, after we do something gracious for them. The aphorism I speak of is, “The least they could have done is to say thanks.” This has become a real problem with many of us. But as I often say, “Don’t let another’s problem become yours; then you have two with the same problem.” With the kind of problem I’m speaking of I’d rather the other fella have it.
If you do for someone for Jesus’ sake, then you need no thanks. Because you were not doing it for yourself, but for your Lord. He will show His gratitude, if no one else ever does! No child of God goes thankless when doing what he or she does, only for His sake.
The secret in doing for others is found in not expecting a “Thank You.” Jesus didn’t pout or get ruffled because 9 out of the 10 were ingrates. He simply questioningly commented on the fact they didn’t return to give Him thanks and God the glory.
Many today, it seems to me, have a short memory when it comes to what wonderful things others have done for them; especially this is true in our thanks to God, for all the great and merciful things He has done for each of us.
“When gratitude goes, then that person’s life is shipwrecked.”~ Dr. Bob Jones Sr.
