JOHN THE BELOVED
“The disciple whom Jesus loved.”~ Jn. 19:26;20:2;21:7;21:20
Four times we find the above wording in the Holy Scriptures. This was not a braggadocios statement, or else he would have used his name in the context. As it's worded his person is veiled. No! These references are not coming from a haughty man, but a humble one. He, as many of us, could not get over the fact Jesus loved the likes of him.
This hothead, when a younger man, had a temper like thunder (Mk. 3:17) along with a calloused heart that could call fire down on innocent people (Lk. 9:54). But the Lord saw what he could become, not what he was at the present time. Christ, through long patience, made him into the disciple of love. Thus he penned, “Beloved, let us love one another.” (1 Jn. 4:7)
It is purported that Michelangelo said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.” And so it was with John the Beloved. Jesus saw in that granite-like piece of stone a loving, caring old man. And what he did for John, my friend, He can and will do for us. Like the song says, “It is no secret what God can do. What He’s done for others, He’ll do for you.”
