HELPLESS AND HOPELESS
"And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, And had suffered many things of many physicians, and had spent all that she had, and was nothing bettered, but rather grew worse, When she had heard of Jesus, came..." [to Him]. ~ Mk. 5:25-26
The thing that warranted her coming to Jesus was her incurability. She had found all the physicians had no healing power in her particular case. Her funds were depleted and she grew worse by the day. It is apparent she was, as we say, plum worn out and tired of it all. Her life was being drained away.
Man had done his utmost for twelve years and failed. But as Puritan John Flavel said, "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." The impotent means drove her to the omnipotent Man! As I have said on many occasions in my articles "At the end of self you will find God."
When will we ever learn? We hew out one cistern after another and still as each one breaks, we try another. As the contemporary song goes, "Try Jesus." He will not reject us because we have tried Him last! He will welcome us as though we had come to Him first.
As another has written, "Blessed failures, happy disappointments, that thus throw men, with their poor aching hearts, upon the loving-kindness of our Lord." The same author goes on to say, "Earthly disappointment is the introduction to heavenly blessedness."
