Short Sentence Prayers
If “Jesus Wept” is the shortest sentence and prayer of the Bible, then Peter’s prayer, “Lord, save me,” is second to it. Peter was not in a situation where he could offer up a wordy prayer. He was sinking fast and needed an immediate answer to his prayer. I like what A. W. Pink writes, “Sometimes wordy prayers are no more than windy prayers.”
Henry Jowett had a little booklet he entitled, “SENTENCE PRAYERS for EVERY DAY.” It’s possible for a brief prayer to say more than a lengthy one. There are times when an ocean of words can come from a teacup of words! Generally speaking, brevity is best. The wise man said, "Let thy words be few."
In Matt. 6:7 Jesus tells of people who think their prayers will be heard because of their “much speaking.” He also spoke of some who in pretence made “long prayers”~Mk. 12:40. Bible prayers, on the whole, were not drawn out. Jesus praying all night was the exception to the rule.
The false prophets prayed from sunup till sundown for the fire to fall, and there was no answer; Elijah prayed a brief prayer of 63 words and the fire fell.
