“… but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike.”~1 Sam. 30:24
We hear much today about, “Stay-at-Home Mothers"; but I have come up with a kindred phrase: “Stay-at-Home Christians.” The thought came to me as I read our text.
David and 400 of his men had just returned from battle, and he had left 200 behind to guard (keep safe) the stuff. Any soldier going to battle will tell you that many of the things he leaves behind are important to him. He looks to those left behind to care for them.
Upon David’s triumphant return, he divides the spoils of battle. In doing so, he gives those who stayed ‘behind the lines’ the same as those who fought in the ‘front lines’. Some found fault with sharing equally with the stay-at-home Christians.
Jesus says to such critics, “Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own?” If you agreed to a penny a day and received that amount, then He fulfilled His Word. In the meantime cannot He give the same to those whom you consider less deserving, if that is what He promised them also?
What would we do without these stalwarts at-homers? Those who lift Moses’ hands till the battle is won? And the few who kept the missionary, Paul, alive by letting him down in a basket in his escape for his life? These were not and are not, second class Christians!
