“I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go…~Sng. 3:4; 1:7; 3:1,2,3
Five times in the book that tells the intimate story of two lovers (Solomon and his Shunammite) do we find her saying of him, “…my soul loveth.” O, how she loved her lover!
Early in my Christian life, as I read through my Bible, this Shunammite girl always caught my attention. Through these many years I have come to believe (and you may disagree) something that blesses my heart. Of course it is speculation. But allow me a little room to think out loud.
In 1 Kings chapter one we find David is now an old man and dying. It seems he was bed-ridden and had difficulty staying warm. So they sought out a young virgin Shunammite girl by the name of Abishag, to lie next to him in helping him with the heat from her body. We’re told David knew her not (sexually) and also that she cherished the king.
In chapter two, Adonijah, David’s elder brother, asks Bathsheba to request of King Solomon the hand of this Shunammite girl in marriage. Upon hearing this Solomon immediately commanded Adonijah's death. Certainly he was a threat to the kingdom, but me thinks she also had a part in his decision.
Both of these brothers, I believe, when visiting their father in his sickness, observed this beautiful virgin girl. Could it be that the two of them both fell in love with her? If this be so, how it changes our reading of the Book of Solomon. It would mean Abishag was possibly the Shunammite girl in Song of Solomon.
What a wonderful and glorious thing the love between a man and a woman! “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.”~ Sng. 8:7
I deeply loved my Shunammite spouse and she loved me as well, for 57 years. I can’t wait to enter that Heavenly Palace and see her again.
My Christian brothers and sisters, I beg you, if you have neglected your love for your mate, rekindle that love today.
