The Ancient of Days
“I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the Hair of His head like the pure wool His throne was like the fiery flame…~ Dan. 7:9
Daniel mentions The Ancient of Days three times in his writings, in chapter seven, verses 9, 13, and 22. This scene cannot be taken literally, for God does not have a body (He is Spirit), clothes or white hair. It is to be taken symbolically. We are to always take scripture literally unless impossible.
Daniel is emphasizing our God’s eternalness, His being from everlasting to everlasting. He speaks of our Sovereign’s character, His nature.
The godly prophet is telling us God is and was a first-hand witness, not secondhand. He shows us He was the only first-hand spectator of the past, present, and future. He was in the beginning; therefore, He was before the beginning. It is so with days; He was already there when there was a first day.
I told my son Andrew recently, “How I enjoy, as Job refers to them, being among God’s ancient saints. That is, growing old in the presence of THE ANCIENT of DAYS!
