THE BIBLE AND EXCEPTIONS TO THE RULE
“And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?~ Lk. 6:3-4
In our text above you will find nowhere in either testament, to my knowledge, where what David did is condemned. On the contrary, it seems Jesus condoned it. For in the context He, like David, was using the exception to the rule. Our gracious God had allowed exceptions to His rule of Law. Throughout the Holy Scriptures you’ll find this to be true. God gives elbow room.
God was married to Israel but put her away, then took her back, which the Law forbids (Deut. 24:4); Jesus answered the prayer of a Gentile woman, after saying plainly God had sent Him only to the Jews; and Paul tells us Christ is a Priest in spite of the fact He was from the wrong tribe. The list goes on. I mention the above truth for those who are sticklers for crossing all their “t’s” and polishing their “i’s.”
I read recently by an old writer the following, “When there is no exception to your rule, I doubt your rule is right.” The Parasical leagalist will kick against such statements. But it is always good to do good, even on the Sabbath! Be careful in censoring your brother or sister: you may find yourself censoring God. Let us remember, it was God who wrote the Rule Book.
To be sure, ALL exceptions to the rule ultimately glorify God! If not, as mentioned, you have the wrong rule.
