“…a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth…a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock.”~Lk. 6:49, 48
“I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon.”~ 1 Cor. 3:10
The devotionalist says, “Let’s get back to the Gospel and Jesus and His cross.” While at the other end of the spectrum the dispensationalist tells us we need to get into Paul epistles and the risen Christ. Of the two, which is right? Both, in their own ways. I know it is paradoxical, but nevertheless true. Like the contention which arose between Paul and Barnabas over young John Mark, each were wrong; but still in another sense, right.
The gospels are foundational; while Paul’s writings are structural. A foundation without a structure is of little use, for foundations are meant to be built upon. On the other hand, a structure without a sure foundation cannot and will not stand the test of time. The first good storm will bring it down. Like the melody of the old song from the 50’s goes, “They Go Together Like a Horse and Carriage.”
As the apostle tells us, “Christ is not divided.” The whole burnt offering of the Old Testament (of which Jesus is a type) was not divided, as other offerings were. Solomon said, “Divide the child.” But the true mother forbade dividing her son. True, enlightened believers want the Son in His entirety!
