“And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.”~Lk. 4:4
In the Temptation of Jesus, He is there as representative man, as The Man Christ Jesus. The Temptation is mentioned in the first three Gospels, but not the forth. In Matthew He is seen as The King; in Mark, as The Servant; in Luke, The Man; it is not recorded in John because there He is seen as God, and God cannot be tempted; the other three can.
In our text the Lord Jesus tells us how man should live on this earth. Francis Schaeffer wrote a book entitled, How Then Shall we Live? Well, the greatest authority who ever graced this world covered the subject on how to live over 2000 years ago. Actually it was some 3500 years; for Jesus was quoting Deuteronomy chapter eight verse three. Who better could tell us how we should live than "The Life" Himself?
There’s more to life than physical bread alone to sustain us; we must have spiritual nourishment from God’s Holy Word, says our Lord.
When the New Testament writers quote the scriptures they were all to be found in the Old Testament, with the exception of Peter’s quoting Paul’s writings, in his second epistle. When reading such statements in the New Testament as, “What saith the scripture?”; and “It is written,” all have reference to the old Canon.
Timothy, as a child, was saved by reading them; what would we do without the wisdom of Proverbs and the comfort of Psalms?; what about Jeremiah 33:3?; who would want to give up all the sweet promises in the book of Isaiah?
I hear someone say, "But they are Jewish promises.” My answer to such is found in Rom.4:23-24, “Now it was not written for his [Abraham’s] sake alone, that it was imputed to him; But for us [Gentiles] also, to whom it shall be imputed.” Their God is my God! “Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also.” Therefore, every promise in the Book is mine.
As to the two Testaments — the New is enfolded in the Old and the Old unfolded in the New.
