“Jesus answered...the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life...He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.”~
Jn. 4:13-14: 7:38
Make sure in your devotional time you get something for yourself; any overflow is for others. It is possible to feed others and go home hungry yourself. Jesus tells the story of a man going to his baker friend to get bread for another, but he had nothing for himself. Principle? “they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.”
I remember in my earlier days, after blessed times with the Lord, rushing to my dear wife and telling her what the Holy Spirit had given me. I also remember how, afterwards, I went away with such an empty feeling. We need to keep in reserve the things that God gives us personally for our own nourishment. Weakness can’t help weakness!
There are certain things Jesus wants to keep between just Him and us, “...He charged them that they should tell no man what things they had seen...” Samson lost his power by telling his spiritual secrets. I think Micah alludes to this, “...keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.” As Will Rogers said, “Never miss a chance to shut up.”
Intimacy with God, as in all other close relationships, requires some amount of secrecy. The wise man tells us, “A fool uttereth all his mind: but a wise man keepeth it in till afterwards...Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.” I’m tired of playing the fool— how about you?
