“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”~ 1 Pet. 5:8
“And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed…”~ Rev. 5:5
If, as the wise man tells us in Prov. 30:30, “A lion which is strongest among beasts, and turneth not away for any,” is so, then it stands to reason the only other beast that can overcome him is another lion.
Someone might say, “But I thought Jesus was a Lamb.” True, but our Lamb has a Lion’s heart! He is a Lamb to His elect, but a Lion to our adversary, the devil. Satan did not meet his equal in Jesus, but his superior!
Satan’s outward attire as a lion is only cosmetic; inwardly he trembles at the very thought of Jesus, who made a “show of him“ openly at the Cross! (Col. 2:15) At the end when all creation bows to our LION KING, Satan will be among them. I like to term it, "The Great Humiliation!”
How I love Martin Luther’s song, A MIGHTY FORTRESS:
1 A mighty fortress is our God,
a bulwark never failing;
our helper he, amid the flood
of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe
does seek to work us woe;
his craft and power are great,
and armed with cruel hate,
on earth is not his equal.
2 Did we in our own strength confide,
our striving would be losing,
were not the right Man on our side,
the Man of God's own choosing.
You ask who that may be?
Christ Jesus, it is he;
Lord Sabaoth his name,
from age to age the same;
and he must win the battle.
3 And though this world, with devils filled,
should threaten to undo us,
we will not fear, for God has willed
his truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim,
we tremble not for him;
his rage we can endure,
for lo! his doom is sure;
one little word shall fell him.
