“…that ye may know the way by which ye must go: for ye have not passed this way heretofore.”~ Josh. 3:4,b
I have learned, as the old camp meeting preacher once said about God, “When you can’t see Him, you can track Him.” And I try always to remember, “He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.”
The background of our opening text is about the future path God had chosen for His elect people, they had never passed that way before; neither had anyone else trodden that path to Canaan. That is, by way of the Jordan River.
It was new ground for them. It was full of blessings to come and yes, the difficulties that accompany those blessings. The unknown was awaiting them, but not in God’s mind, as Job said: “He knoweth the way that I take.”
We feel comfortable with the present, but too often fear the future. That is where our faith comes in, “Now faith is…the evidence of things not seen.” As the old axiom puts it, “I don’t know what tomorrow holds, but I know WHO holds tomorrow.”
In our story of Israel passing over Jordan entering uncharted ways, we see God going before them — all they had to do was follow. And so it is with us, dear ones. As the song writer put it:
My Lord knows the way through the wilderness,
All I have to do is follow.
My Lord knows the way through the wilderness,
All I have to do is follow.
Strength for today is mine all the way,
And all that I need for tomorrow.
My Lord knows the way through the wilderness,
All I have to do is follow
