In Romans chapter sixteen, we find Paul greeting twenty nine saints, nine of which are women. Many women helped Paul in his ministry, “…help those women which laboured with me in the gospel,”~ Phil. 4:3. This was also true of our Lord’s labors. "There were also women…(Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women…” Mk. 15: 40-41
I think Paul has received a bad rap, as they say. I refer to Bible preachers, teachers, and scholars categorizing him as a chauvinist. No where do you find him lording it over women, manifesting superiority over them. He was a great defender of the opposite sex. He was a great friend and liberator of Christian womanhood!
To say he taught women to stay at home, keep house, and raise children is a general truth, not a particular one. He didn’t tell the business lady Lydia, or Phebe to cease from their business at hand. Nor did he condemn young women remaining single.
When reading the Bible you must be careful to take the context as well as comparing scripture with scripture. You must also take the culture of that day into consideration. We may take from certain things the principle taught, we can take that away with us, but not the literalness. For example: we no longer wash each other's feet, but we can do humble service to our dear brethren in other ways. Nor do we kiss one another with a holy kiss, but we can show our affection in kindred ways.
In Church history women played a great part in the furtherance of the Gospel! Don’t underrate them.
