You can see from the caption above that our old beloved, “Swabby Friend” Popeye, didn’t have a problem accepting who he was.
I have learned most people have some sort of identity crisis at some time in their lives; some are more severe than others. In observing and dealing with mankind for well over half a century, there has been ample proof that this statement is factual.
God never had any kind of identity crisis. He told Moses, “I Am that I Am”; PERIOD! Paul had to add to a like kindred statement, “But by the grace of God I am what I am.” As Matthew Henry said, “It is God’s prerogative to say ‘I AM THAT I AM’. It is our privilege to say, “But by the grace of God I am what I am.”
Acknowledging and accepting who we are is prerequisite to our fellowship with and usefulness of God. They asked John the Baptist who he was; his answer? “A voice in the wilderness.”
Whoever or whatever we are, it is God who made us thus, and not we ourselves, said the prophet. Yes, some to honour and others to dishonour, Paul tells us. A preacher friend born with cerebral palsy once remarked to me, “God made me a dishonorable vessel. I plan to glorify Him all my life with it!”
“Nay but, O man, who art thou that repliest against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it, Why hast thou made me thus? Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?”
