Num 18:20,23,24 KJV~ And the LORD spake unto Aaron (of the Tribe of Levi), Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt thou have any part among them: I [am] thy part and thine inheritance among the children of Israel.
Eze 44:28 KJV~ I [am] their (Levites) inheritance: and ye shall give them no possession in Israel: I [am] their possession.
Someone says, “Poor Levites, they had little to nothing.” Yes! I say, but add, “ONLY GOD!” He was their part (portion) and inheritance. God gave them cities to dwell in, but not own. They were not landowners, either by purchase or descent. But in spite of all the things other tribes had, they were better off than all of them put together!
If we have God we have all. As Paul says, “He is all and in all.” If He is our “All,” then in the end, God is all we really need.
Just as Israel was a Peculiar People, the Levites were a Peculiar Tribe. One of their main responsibilities was a very important one, it was their duty to instruct the people in the right way to live before God as well as the ministering of the things of the tabernacle.
In the encampment of the tribes of Israel around the tabernacle, where God abode, when it rested, we find the tribe of the Levites were closest to God! God instructed the rest of the tribes to keep their distance, but the Levites were, so to speak, up close and personal. “Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard…far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch,~Num. 2:2. But the Tribe of Levi encompassed it.
The priesthood in Scripture came from the tribe of Levi. Three times in Revelation we are told God made us priests. O, blessed be God. He is now our inheritance and part (portion), as were the Levites of old!
“If you know Christ, it is enough, if you are ignorant of other things—If you are unacquainted with Christ, it is nothing if you know everything else.” ~Philip Henry (Mathew Henry’s father)
