“And the Spirit of the LORD will come upon thee, and thou…shalt be turned into another man.”~ 1 Sam. 10:6
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God…be ye transformed…”~ Rom. 12:1-2
God’s goal for us is higher than we can imagine for ourselves. He didn’t come to make us good people, though that’s included, but mainly a godly people. Our Sovereign will not be content with anything less than an absolute and complete change. He sent His Son to make it possible!
Sometimes the pain of transformation can be so fierce that we begin to question whether it is really worth it. As C.S. Lewis brings out in one of his writings, “Only Aslan, the Great Lion, could completely remove the skin and only by using his fearsome claws."
But is it not worth the pain and discomfort to have the old self removed and be made into a new creature that God intends us to be? To quote Lewis again, “We’re too easily satisfied.”
The story is told of St. Augustine, who lived with a prostitute before his conversion. After he was wonderfully saved, he was walking down the street and this prostitute saw him. She shouted his name and he kept walking. He saw her, but kept his eyes straightforward and walked. She continued crying after him and ran after him. And finally, she said, “Augustine, it is I. To which he replied, I know, but it is no longer I.”
“Don’t despise the sharp chisel, it’s making something beautiful.”~rds
