Voided Vows
“When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin…” ~ Eccl. 5:4-6
Strange indeed, don’t you think, how most of us keep our vows to our spouse, the love of our life, but can so easily break those made to the Lover of our souls? How like Samson so many of us are!
Oswald Chambers says, “Don’t vow; for if you make a vow even in ordinary matters and do not keep it, you are the worse for it…we reap terrific damage to our own character when we vow and do not perform. Don’t pile up vows…certainly not before God.” He adds, “Spiritual leakage is accounted for in this way.”
As to my own thoughts on the subject, I think, rather than vow, it would be more advantageous to our souls to follow the popular vernacular of our day, “Just Do It.”
