“Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.”~ Sng. 2:15
I got the idea for this article from a textual conversation I had recently with a loved one. They mentioned another who, on that particular day, was experiencing a score of little things all going wrong at the same time. I think each of us can relate to this dreaded experience, don’t you agree?
Personally I think in this portion of scripture Solomon is giving an analogy to his bride to be cautious of things that can and will hinder their relationship. And surprisingly it is not the big things he warns her of, but the small things, as any professional knows whether: plumber, electrician, mechanic; or physician.
Certainly the larger foxes are not exempt, they cause great damage to the vines and fruit also, but he emphasizes the “little.” And why this admonition? Simply because, generally speaking, when the little things are corrected, the larger lose their traction. If not attended to, the little can ultimately do great harm.
Unless those little things that destroy our relationship with our precious Lord are quashed immediately, they will gnaw away at the tender love and devotion we have for our Beloved until it has faded away. Let us not be concerned with the loss of a penny and neglect the Pearl of Great Price that we have found!
Nothing between my soul and the Savior,
So that His blessed face may be seen;
Nothing preventing the least of His favor,
Keep the way clear! Let nothing between.
