“For to this end Christ both died, and rose, and revived, that He might be Lord both of the dead and living.”~ Rom. 14:9
In J. Oswald Sanders' excellent book Paul the Leader he makes a great statement concerning Christ and the Cross: “Christ‘s death was the logical means to procure His enthronement…[our text] simply and explicitly state the ultimate purpose of the Cross…we have considered Christ’s purpose for us in His death…now we focus on the purpose of the Cross for Himself…[that is] to obtain complete sovereignty over the lives of those for whom He died, in time and eternity.”
I have never been able to understand the bickering over this subject when it is clear it is a settled fact in Heaven! We do not, as erroneously preached by some, accept Him as Lord. NO! a thousand times over, He IS LORD, accept It or not, (Acts 10:36). But you do have to acknowledge it: to experience its effectiveness in your personal life.
The ideal time for this is at conversion (as in Paul’s case, Acts 9). But for many it comes later on in their Christian life (as in Thomas’ case, Jn. 20). And sad to say, some never do (as in the case of Demas, 2 Tim. 4).
Again, to quote Sanders, “Too many Christians are willing to accept all the benefits of His Saviourhood but reluctant to bow to His Sovereignty.” It is voluntary now, but will be compulsory in the end! (Phil. 2:9-10)
Though Christ’s coat was divided, He will never suffer His crown to be divided.”~Thomas Brooks
